ALL-IN TO WIN The beautiful nature of No Limit Hold ‘Em poker is that there is no limit, which means you can put all of your chips at risk at any given time. That’s also the infuriating part of the game – especially if you choose to do it at the wrong time. Players that go All-in aren’t always the ones with the fewest chips. Some players try to prove a point by going All-In well before they need to. Their reasons range from trying to establish their own unpredictability, celebrating a strong hand, chasing away any and all opponents, or just simply hoping to win the pot right there. Or maybe they’re just being impatient. On the surface, an All-In bet appears to mean an opponent has a strong hand. Certainly when a player goes All-In on the river, it means they have the nuts, right? Of course not. Remember: unpredictability is the name of the game. As a matter of fact, most experienced poker players will tell you an All-In bet is more likely to NOT be backed up by strong cards. Well, certainly not the nuts. After all, if you had the nuts, wouldn’t you want to make money off of it? Wouldn’t you want an opponent – or two – to call you? An All-In bet is usually designed to REPEL opponents, not invite them into your lair. Meanwhile, going All-In with anything less than the nuts is just putting your stack, or a sizable portion of it, needlessly at risk. |
