SHORT STACKS: SPARE YOURS, SPOIL THEIRS Finding yourself in the short stack means one thing. You stink. Might as well quit now and never show your face again. But in all seriousness, being a short stack generally means you’ve run into some bad luck, or maybe got caught on the wrong end of a big hand. It happens. Sometimes we play right and still get beat. But it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. Many a great player has had to battle back from being the short stack. And they all have a definitive way of doing it. It requires timing, savvy, lots of luck, and some special rules of engagement. The first Short Stack rule is to play tight. It seems obvious and intuitive, but a lot of short stack players will do the exact opposite because they seem to not care anymore, or they feel they have to start their comeback sometime. As an opponent of the Short Stack player, their tight play allows you to be aggressive against them. They’re generally pushing their minimum hand way back and only going in with the strongest of hands. This makes them susceptible to overbets. Then there are the Short Stacks you need to be aware of. The volatile loose cannons. They could drop that all-in bomb at any minute. The key thing to determine when playing against a Short Stacker is how volatile are they. If they seem like a loose cannon, then you need to make sure you’re prepared for the bomb. |
