WEAK ACES But some of us still have an allure for Ace-rags, like we want to show off that we actually got an Ace to play with! After dozens of hands not worth the cheap felt they’re mucked on, we finally got a good looking card! But as any smart poker player knows (and even several dumb ones), a good hand is never determined by one card. Don’t get me wrong -- Weak Aces do win sometimes. Yeah, well, so does 10-2. But the idea of poker is to manage your money. You increase your chances of doing so by playing percentages. And if you limp in with Ace-rags, you’re very susceptible to a raise that is more than likely an Ace with a higher kicker or a pocket pair that you only have a limited chance to beat. With all that said, there are times when you can play Ace-rags (although it’s never downright advisable). But try to stick to the following guidelines: · Only from middle to late position. · Only when suited. · Not into a raised pot. Like the problem the drinker faced with a bottle of whiskey right in front of him, avoid the temptation of the attractive Ace. It’ll leave you high and dry and with a terrible headache the next morning. |
