DEFEND THE BLIND SIDE! Being caught in the blinds is never fun. You’ve been forced to put in money for a hand that you otherwise would have folded. And the other players at the table assume they can run over you. To them, the two blinds are two less hands they have to worry about. That’s why many players, especially ones in late position, will bet over the top of the blinds. Because of this, it’s often a decent strategic move to defend your blinds. In other words, call those thieves! Sometimes calling a raiser is about more than just having a good hand. It’s about personal integrity! It’s about circumventing bullying tactics! The true test comes after the flop. You’re playing a marginal hand just to make a point, and now you missed. You took a stand against a player who you felt was trying to push you around. You made the initial investment to send a message. Now, even though you may be behind, you should consider solidifying the point. Yes, it’s putting more money at risk, but one of three things happens: a) your opponent is “caught” and folds, b) your opponent comes over the top, at which point you should slink away, or c) your opponent calls and you get to see another card, allowing you to check with more dignity. In any of these scenarios, the one thing you have accomplished is that you’ve gained your opponents respect and he probably won’t try to steal your blinds again. |
