THE CONTINUATION BET

Anyone can suck up the nerve to make a strong, confident bet. The key to winning poker is being able to back that bet up, or to make a Continuation Bet.

A Continuation Bet is more than just the chips that go onto the table after the next community card. It’s the attitude that goes along with it. Being able to pull the trigger – with a confidence that says, “I don’t care the flop just came 7, 4, 2 rainbow. I still got something.”

The simple message you’re sending by the continuation bet after a bad flop is that you’re confident that you STILL have the strongest hand. It’s safer to assume that your continuation bet will have the desired outcome with cards that wouldn’t help a pig in a poke.

But then there are those players who aren’t going to believe that you actually improved your hand so they may raise. So is a continuation bet the right thing to do? Sacrificing the “power” by not betting runs the risk of tipping your opponent off to the fact that you missed the flop. But betting exposes your chips to an opponent who may have caught a stronger hand. As with almost all poker plays, reading your opponents before you play is key. If you think you’re dealing with a player who can be tricked into thinking you have a strong hand, or one that my have just improved, you may be able to get the player to fold his cards
