SPOT AT THE TABLE When it comes to poker, sometimes the smallest things can be an advantage or disadvantage. Many are out of a player’s control. Where you sit at a given table can make all the difference in the world as to how your game is going to go. Sometimes, this is out of your control. Sometimes it’s in. In a tournament setting, seats are assigned, so you have no choice. But in a cash game, if there is more than one spot, you are allowed to choose. So how do you pick? If you know who the good players are, you would rather be behind them, so you can act after them. You also want to avoid being immediately to the right of a hyper aggressive player who is betting every hand. You will lose chips trying to limp or to that player’s re-raises. If you know a player is weak or tight., try to sit to their right. You can raise their blinds and take chips, and know if you get a call or re-raise you are up against a legitimate hand. When you don’t have a choice, however, you should vary your play accordingly and use the tactics above when you can. Fewer limps with aggressive players to your left. More raises to weak/tight players to your left. Figure out the advantage and disadvantages of your place at the table and you will be a better player.
